Your analogy is spot on! However you now have me questioning my dreams of becoming a rescue diver. We've only got this one planet (for now) I think you make a good point that experimenting with climate engineering is truly an experiment and mechanical and reactionary thinking isn't a good solution. While perhaps we shouldn't rule out climate engineering altogether perhaps a proactive and systems based approach will help us find real solutions.

Glad you like the new look! I agree that climate engineering can serve as emergency damage control. But I prefer the metaphor of the selfish surfer who catches the waves during a hurricane, knowing that a rescue diver is on call to save him if need be. In my opinion, society is much less disciplined than a seasoned marathoner.

One of the things I like least about the idea of climate engineering is the idea that we have a card up our sleeve in case things get really bad. It is kind of like having knee surgery so you can run marathons because you wore out your knee on so many previous marathons, maybe taking up cycling?? I'm loving the new look of Clean Tech Verdict!!

Great holistic approach! I think these are all very tangible goals to set in the new year. I think a balance should be struck between government financing of clean tech and government policy driven "carrots" or "sticks." This past year government investment received a lot of flak. A123, Solyndra, were big bumps in the road. I think we still need programs like those to push the frontiers of American R&D in clean tech but to the extent that TARP did, won't happen again for a long long time. The high risk, high reward is something only government funding can do, fail rates are just too high for private investment, so in a sense, we got probably better results than what were to be expected? Do you agree? I think there is an opportunity for 2013 to be a year focused around spending cuts through transition to policy driven incentives that focuses on boosting the appeal of clean tech (carrot) or requiring greater regulation (stick) on conventional technologies (Policy being cheaper than direct investment financing).
